Dead by Daylight- An asymmetrical video game, in Dead by Daylight you can play as a survivor working with three other survivors to escape an antagonist, or you can play as the antagonist hunting down the four survivors. Each antagonist has their own abilities that makes them unique, and some are even some based off of famous horror movies or T.V. shows, such as Michael Myers, Leatherface, and - most recently - the Demogorgon from T.V. show Stranger Things. The survivors also have unique abilities, but these abilities, which are referred to as perks, can be upgraded to be available for several survivors. The same goes for antagonist perks. The survivors also come from famous movies and shows, such as Laurie Strode, Detective Tapp, Steve Harrington, and Nancy Wheeler, the last two also from Stranger Things. The game can be quite suspenseful as a survivor, even a bit thrilling. If you like more horror based games that are a bit of a challenge and might include a bit of brutality, Dead by Daylight is one you should check out. Also a great game to fool around with friends!
Killing Floor 2- If you enjoy eliminating zombies (referred to as ‘zeds’ ingame) in a variety of different ways with several different types of weapons to choose from, Killing Floor 2 is a game to check out. While the game does have a story to it, the gameplay itself is rather repetitive. There are 4 game modes, all of which have slightly different gameplay but still involve eliminating lots of zeds. The game has different ‘perks’ to play as, which are pretty much classes. They range from the melee weapon wielding berserker, the field medic with potential to heal teammates but also cause chaos, to various other perks that focus on specific weapon types. There are a total of 10 perks, so you’re bound to find one that you enjoy playing as. I’d definitely recommend Killing Floor 2 if you don’t mind repetitive gameplay and enjoy first person shooters.
*Horizon Zero Dawn- Horizon Zero Dawn is an amazing adventure game with a well written story. It’s the type of game you can get easily invested in due to the story, graphics, and gameplay versatility. In the game, you play as Aloy, a young girl from the Nora Tribe that was outcasted at a young age for unknown reasons. As a young girl, she found a mysterious device that proves to be quite helpful. As she becomes a young woman, she plans to participate in the proving to finally become a Nora tribe member, which eventually leads her on a long journey. The game is set in the future, where we can presume humanity has restarted as there is no modern technology that we know of today. However, there are many types of machines that resemble animals and dinosaurs, which are what Aloy mainly fights off. There are also human enemies, usually bandits. The game is long with beautiful scenery and enticing gameplay, my personal favorite of all time. There are many difficulties to choose from, ranging from the easiest suitable for players who prefer to indulge more into the story rather than the gameplay, an even difficulty that allows the play to enjoy the story while also being involved in gameplay aspects, and to the most difficult setting for players looking for a challenge. If you like games with a vast story to explore, I highly recommend Horizon Zero Dawn.
Overwatch- Overwatch is a team based FPS made by Blizzard Entertainment. The game consists of 30 heroes, with new heroes being added about every four months or so. All of the heroes fit into one specific category: damage, tank, or support. They all have unique abilities vastly different from other characters, plus they also have in-depth backstories that are often explored more through animations on the official Overwatch youtube channel and short online comics usually focusing on one specific character. If you’re interested in FPS games with several unique characters to choose from, Overwatch is a game you should check out.
Journey/Abzû- These two games are grouped together due to their similarities despite being created by different developers, but being made by the same artist. While they don’t have much concrete storytelling, both are incredibly beautiful. ‘Journey’ is mostly set in a desert environment where you play as a little mysterious figure with a red robe. The majority of the gameplay is solving puzzles, and later on you get paired up with another player to solve puzzles together. Abzû, is similarly an incredibly beautiful game set underwater. The gameplay is also mostly puzzle based, along with places to meditate and riding large aquatic creatures and swimming with schools of fish. Both games are relaxing to play and, as I’ve mentioned before, incredibly beautiful. They aren’t too long, either, so if you want a simple relaxing game filled with pleasing visuals, this is a great choice for you.
Final Fantasy XV
*Marvel’s Spiderman- As evident in the name of the game, Marvel’s Spiderman for PS4 revolves around Peter Parker as an adult. Compared to older Spiderman games, the graphics and game mechanics are a notable improvement, especially the web-swinging. The graphics of New York City are beautiful ingame, making it fun to simply swing around the city for several minutes. There are also sections of the game where you play Peter Parker out of his Spiderman suit, along with the occasional stealth missions as Miles Morales or Mary Jane. The game also has three separate DLC’s, all tying into each other in some way, although they aren’t required to enjoy the main game. If you feel like being a light-hearted superhero with great graphics, Marvel’s Spiderman for PS4 is a good choice to check out.
*Detroit: Become Human- One of the three most popular story games by Quantic Dream, the other two being Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. The storyline of the game revolves around a future where androids have been invented to be used for a variety of purposes, mostly to be household assistants. The game follows three protagonists, all androids. They include Kara, an android female in appearance that works as a household assistant for a single father and his daughter, but the player soon finds out that he struggles with drug addiction. Markus, an android male in appearance who is an assistant for Carl Manfred, a famous painter in Detroit. And finally, Connor, who works as the assistant to Lieutenant Hank Anderson, who is investigating the increasing rate of androids becoming deviant, which pretty much means they have become sentient and gain human emotions. Both Kara and Markus become deviants early on, which differs from Connor where the player chooses later on in the game. Detroit: Become Human is a story driven game without much actual gameplay, mostly consisting of moving the characters around and the occasional quick time event along with dialogue choices. If you’re someone that enjoys delving deep into a storyline that doesn’t have too much of a focus on gameplay, then this is a good option for you.
Minecraft- Minecraft has recently exploded in popularity, and for good reason. Despite the game seemingly targeting younger children as its main audience, the game is very fun and relaxing to play. You can really unleash your creativity with the vast amount of things you can build and activities to do. It’s also fun to simply goof around with friends and building together. The game is available on all platforms, so it’s a good choice for simply relaxing and relieving stress. The game has no exact primary objective, only an optional boss in order to “finish” the game but one can simply explore, build, or collect pets if they wanted to. You can have an immense amount of creative freedom in this game.
